- All other students can choose one item from the Open Section (a, b or c) to make at home and bring to school on the morning of Tuesday the 13th October.
Camp
The overnight camp for Yr5/6 takes place at Lake Karapiro departing school on Tuesday the 3rd November and returning on Thursday the 5th . By now you should have received all the information and forms for camp. A reminder that the cost is $170.Camp fees need to be paid in full at least 2 week prior to departure. Please do let us know if you need to make other arrangements.
Class Release Time (CRT)
Class Release Time is time entitled to staff. Teachers are released from their class for planning, implementation, assessment, evaluation and reporting of a sequential programme for their class. Staff on CRT will be replaced by either a reliever or colleague. Please note that there will be times this term when I will be on CRT out of class as in the past.
Blogs
Please note that our class will be updating our class blog regularly this term to inform parents of our learning and update them on upcoming events so please watch this space.
Genius Hour
This term, we will be introducing Genius Hour in our classroom in the afternoons. Genius Hour allows students to explore their own passions and encourages creativity in the classroom. It provides students a choice in what they learn during a set period of time during school.
Extension Writing
Some students of Room6 will work with Valerie Millington in the mornings, Monday to Wednesdays.
Clothing
Term 4 is our sunsafe awareness time. All students need to have a hat to wear every day. The best hats are ones that have a brim or a flap that will protect their ears and neck. Students also need to have their shoulders covered i.e. no singlet style tops.
Absences
If children are absent from school, parents MUST phone the absentee line at the school and leave the child’s name, class number, reason for absence and expected date of return to school. Parents delivering or removing children during school time must sign in and out at the office.
Water Bottles
Why should students drink in class? Water lost each day through breathing, sweating and going to the toilet needs to be replaced and adequate fluid intake is essential to good health. Not drinking enough fluid causes dehydration leading to mental and physical effects such as loss of concentration, headaches and irritability. By the time a person is thirsty they are becoming dehydrated. Children rarely drink enough during break times at school and often forget to drink unless reminded. Allowing and reminding students to drink water in class and allowing water bottles in the classroom increases the likelihood that they will drink more and stay hydrated. Please note, only water (no sugar drinks) are allowed at school.
Life Education Trust
The Life Education Mobile Classroom will be at our school from 18th to 24th November and Room6 will be learning why it is important to show empathy towards others and how the choices I make online affect myself and others.

World War One
Imagine if you got trench foot and had to have your feet cut off?.
There are many reasons why I think we shouldn’t have war and one of them is because too many people die. Why do we still remember the soldiers that went to Gallipoli when it was 100 years back, some may say.
Here are some sad facts about the war: Soldier's feet rotted in winter because it was so wet and muddy,it was called, Trench foot. Eight million horses went to war and only two million came back. In the first few months of World War 1 one million men and boys had entered the war. Some rats grew up to the size of cats in the war. In winter some trenches looked more like a swamp than a trench.
According to the book, nice day for a war, soldiers died of the colds, fever and bullets.
Would you be able to put up with all of this for your country?.

Sailing
The waves were crashing against the boat. It was like a thunderstorm, it was so loud. It made me want to fall asleep with the noise. The seagulls were squawking and screeching like a honking trumpet. They made me feel relaxed with their trumpeting goose noise. The sails were swaying like mad against the wind. It made me feel excited knowing I was on a sailboat ready for an adventure.
The movement was so strong, it was like bumping against a speedbump on a bike. It made me feel rather annoyed that I was being thrown back and forth so often. Swaying on the water so peacefully was like a massage so soft you could barely feel it. Swaying like that made me feel sleepy and warm lying in the sun.
I felt sweating palms like wet hands after trying to retrieve your hairband from the pools. It was making me hot and tired. My eyes were stinging from the salt of the ocean like that sting you get after lying on the burning concrete. I was feeling annoyed and pushed hard as I rode my boat. My lips were dry from the wind pushing our sail. I felt so happy as I had my adventure. My hair was knotty from the salty mixture carried by the breeze, so knotty in fact, like trying to untie a knot in a rope. I felt calm as I rode the waves.
The seagulls were swooping and diving over the horizon; desperate for a family picnic. It was like a beautiful painting. It made me feel relaxed until I fell asleep, the coloured jellyfish and seahorses leaving shadowy patterns underwater. It was like the shadows of a disco ball at a party. It made me feel ready for a party. The sun’s golden rays were shining, shining like a star on my little wooden sailboat.
I could smell the salt of the ocean as strong as freshly baked cupcakes in the oven. It was tiring pushing my boat with the strong whiff of salt. The horrid old smell of dead fish floated on the sea’s surface. That smell just plainly made me feel sick. The bait on the rods were making me feel as happy and relaxed as can be because I knew I was free in the ocean.
The vibration of the boat made me hot and sweaty and the wet soggy life jackets grabbed on to me so tightly; as tight as the string holding together the beads on a bracelet. It made me feel calm and relaxed although it was killing me to wear it. It was an extraordinary adventure on my little wooden sailboat.
The salty spray blew in my mouth and the fresh air danced in the breeze, like a beautiful aroma of fresh spring flowers. It made me feel relaxed and calm. The salt spray made me thirsty. Shadows and dark clouds appeared far off in the distance. Tiny teardrops of water popped up and down on the salty surface, like gentle tears, salty and wet. It was the perfect way to enjoy a boat ride.

The difference between ordinary and extraordinary is
that little extra.
Hi everyone and welcome to the Room 6 Blogger Page
Room6 is well on their way
with their learning, classroom routines and expectations. The following is a
brief summary of what we have planned for the rest of this term.
What’s happening in Term1
Numeracy
In Room6 we will focus on Place Value, Addition,
Subtraction and basic facts for the first 5 weeks of term 1 before starting
Statistics in the second half of the term.
Literacy
Students will focus on
punctuation and proofreading our work. Some students will work with Mrs Val
Millington and her extension writing programme.
PE
We will be focusing on
swimming and golf for the first few weeks of school and then we will moving on
to small ball skills (throwing, catching and hitting).
Library
Room6 will be using the
Library on Tuesday afternoons. Your child should have a range of reading
materials, e.g. quick reads (magazines), easy reads (comics, joke books etc)
and at least one fiction and one non-fiction chapter book which they need to
read at school and at home.
Inquiry
Students are investigating:
How to keep ourselves safe on the internet by completing Digital Passport Missions.
General
·
Students are required to bring along an old adult size
shirt or T shirt to wear while painting or dying to protect their clothes.
These shirts can remain in class in the arts cupboards for when students need
them.
·
All students will need a book bag to hang at the back
of their seat to keep all their work together as there will be lots of moving
around the class and working at different work stations.
